    Basic Gun Dog Training

This is a basic hunting retriever training program with a high standard of quality and the beginning of a solid working foundation. The process begins with a solid obedience program which includes training your dog to deliver each bird to hand. Dogs finishing this program are ready for their first hunting season and their introduction to AKC and HRC hunt tests/field competition training course.

Dogs and owners new to hunting and hunting with a retriever are encouraged to actively participate in the dog's training.  La Paloma's "Basic Gun Dog Training" classes are working classes; you and your dog learn by actual "hands on" participation.  Each weekly session includes step-by-step instructions and demonstrations followed by your active participation in the lessons.  Our small class size ensures ample individual assistance from the instructor to answer your questions and review any aspects of the lesson.  La Paloma Retrievers strives to make your training experience and progress successful!

The interaction by students during their training and learning experience creates a problem-solving environment and develops an understanding of how to effectively and consistently communicate with their dog.  As improved skills are acquired, both you and your dog will more fully enjoy many experiences in the field

The emphasis is on obedience and steadiness and developing the dogs marking ability on land and water. Dogs are prepared to learn handling in the field (directional hand signals). In this phase dogs are force-fetched and conditioned to an electronic collar.

What is covered in Basic Gun Dog Training Class?
What can you expect?

The reliable retrieve of your dove, duck, or quail is the foundation to all subsequent field work. The focus of this class is on teaching the necessary steps that lead to a reliable retrieve 'upon command' and under the variety of conditions encountered in hunting situations.

- Dog evaluations

- Obedience and whistle commands for field work

- The Trained Retrieve:
  'FETCH', 'HOLD', and 'GIVE' commands

Reading and understanding your dog's behavior during training
- The importance of 'timing' to effective training-  Appropriate praise and correction for your dog
-  Transition of the Reliable Retrieve to field application
-  Introduction to field equipment and birds

Basic Requirements/Prerequisites: Dogs Must Have:

*Permanent Teeth:

Dogs who are 'teething' do experience discomfort. This discomfort impedes the 'positive association' developed in our training between the mouth and the act of fetching an object. Your dog will be more receptive to learning having its permanent set of teeth.

*Current on Shots:

For the protection of all participants, dogs must be current on rabies, Bordatella (kennel cough vaccination) and other annual vaccinations.  Documentation must be provided before training begins.
